About OIHFF

The Ogeechee International History Film Festival (OIHFF) is the world鈥檚 longest-running open-submission international film festival devoted specifically to history. Founded at 快猫app短视 in 2017, OIHFF grew from the Visual History Summer Institute and from a desire to create a dedicated venue for filmmakers who interpret the past through motion pictures. The festival has received submissions from fifty-five countries, and screened more than 150 films by professional, student, and emerging filmmakers. Its screenings and events are free and open to the public. OIHFF has completed ten uninterrupted annual festivals and is now accepting submissions for its eleventh season, scheduled for February 2027.

OIHFF brings filmmakers, historians, students, and public audiences together to explore how film can recover, interpret, and challenge understandings of the past. Each season, submissions are evaluated for both historical interpretation and cinematic achievement. Guest filmmakers screen their work and meet with students, scholars introduce thematic film programs, and Certificates of Merit for Excellence in Historical Filmmaking recognize distinguished work from around the world. The festival continued virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing it to maintain an uninterrupted record of annual programming and emerge as the longest-running active festival in its field.

The festival is presented by the 快猫app短视 Department of History with support from university and community partners. Current partners and sponsors are listed on the Sponsors page. OIHFF is administered by a nonprofit, all-volunteer festival staff and is committed to making historical filmmaking accessible to audiences while providing a welcoming venue for established filmmakers, students, and first-time directors. We also help train students to work at festivals and submit their work. Private gifts and sponsorships are administered through the 快猫app短视 Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We also welcome archival donations related to films shown at the festival.

OIHFF also offers double-blind peer review for filmmakers affiliated with colleges and universities who wish to have their work evaluated for promotion and tenure. Reviews typically pair a doctorate-holding historian with a filmmaker holding an MFA or Ph.D., allowing films to be assessed for both historical scholarship and cinematic practice. Beginning in 2020, the Ogeechee International History Film Festival became open submission year-round. OIHFF accepts submissions year-round and evaluates films on a rolling basis for Certificates of Merit. Awards

Certificates of Merit for Excellence in Historical Filmmaking recognize works that demonstrate distinction in both historical interpretation and filmmaking. At the conclusion of each annual submission cycle, merit recipients are considered for festival screening. Selected films are then evaluated by a jury of historians and filmmakers for awards in the short, feature, museum or historic-site, experimental, and student categories.
